Beatriz Martinez and Monica Romero, both from Colombia, have performed together since 1999 in Minnesota first with Noche de Gala Dancers, then with Fuego Latino Dancers, Fuego Latino Folklore and now with Sabor Mestizo.  Beatriz is a Brain Injury Specialist and Monica Business Consultant working for non-profit organizations; both share a common hobby of dancing with strong interest of showing positive Colombia, maintaining and passing the legacy and culture thru performing.

Colombia Live is part of Grupo de Danzas Colombianas en MN a non-profit project created to cultivate Colombian traditions, exalt and improve the image of Colombia around the world.  The group is comprised of members of all ages with out distinction of creed or nationality.  We welcome anyone interested in dancing Colombian traditional rythms who become Minnesotan-Colombian ambasadors that create awareness in the community of the enormous natural wealth and beauty that characterizes Colombia.

Human beings express themselves through movement. Dance is the transformation of normal functions and common expressions into movements for extraordinary purposes. Dance can be recreational, ritual, or artistic and goes beyond the functional purpose of everyday movements and sports – it helps us to express emotions or ideas.

Ballet Folklórico México Azteca (BFMA) is a non-profit organization founded on the principles of equality and freedom of expression. BFMA is committed to elevating our community through art education.

This organization’s primary objectives are to keep young and adult people away from idleness and non-productive activities, offer a traditional Mexican performing platform for emerging artist, and enhance the importance and value of the arts and the artist community.

Our repertoire focuses on the preservation of our Mexican Traditions colored with our won expression of this magnificent and varied heritage.

BFMA provides challenging environment that promotes cultural awareness, preserve the Mexican Folkloric Arts, and cultivates interest in dance by striving for the highest level of artistic excellence.

BFMA is operated as a collaborative effort that provides an opportunity, outside of dancing, for each member to contribute his/her distinctive talents and skills. This organization encourages unity, poise, self-confidence, and discipline in an environment that reflects cultural and social diversity.

Ballet Folklórico México Azteca has a very significant goal: “To preserve and maintain the culture of Mexico through the performance of traditional Mexican dance and to increase the knowledge of the Mexican culture in all those who are interested.”

The intention of Ballet Folklórico México Azteca is to educate our dancers in the styles of dance representing the various regions of Mexico and to create educational programs in schools throughout Minnesota as we know this is the perfect age to begin artistic development in students.

BFMA is available and most happy to perform at any special event. We provide the music and promise to display an exciting, spectacular and colorful array Costumes and Dances which represent true Mexican Folklore.

The professional choreographic team, Dario Mejia and Giselle Mejia, received specialized training in the styles of modern, contemporary, and traditional dance forms, from The Juilliard School and SUNY Purchase College, respectively. Their many endeavors in the metro area include teaching with the Cowles Center for Dance and Performing Arts, Academy of Russian Ballet, Premiere Dance Academy, Lundstrum Center for the Performing Arts, and setting original choreography for the Main Street School of Performing Arts. They launched a dance company, Curio Dance, in January of 2009 with a premiere evening length duo performance. Since then, they have aired on MN Original, were highlighted in a documentary of Latino voices in Minnesota, orchestrated a week long artist-in-residence in Hood River, OR, and curated Drop the Mic! at the Guthrie Theater in January 2011.

KetzalCoatlicue (Preciosa madre tierra) es un Kalpulli (comunidad de aprendizaje) de personas identificadas con el indigenismo y con el deseo de preservar, educar y vivir en la tradicion de la danza Azteca de Mexico. KetzalCoatlicue busca este camino espiritual por medio de la musica sagrada del tambor, flautas, conchas y otros instrumentos  compuestos por la naturaleza. KetzalCoatlicue es miembro de la Mesa del Quinto Sol localizado en Axochiapan, Morelos.

KetzalCoatlicue ofrece presentaciones culturales autenticas con comentario sobre los elementos naturales de cada danza y la conecion con el medio ambiente. Nuestros danzantes son infantes, jóvenes y adultos. Hemos danzado para programas educativos y comunitarios, eventos religiosos y juntas de padres, eventos en parques y ceremonias tradicionales. Estamos localizados en el sur de Minneapolis.

KetzalCoatlicue (Precious Mother Earth) is a Kalpulli (learning community) of Indigenous people joined by the desire to learn, share and live the tradition of Mexican Aztec dance. Led by director Susana De León, KetzalCoatlicue pursues this spiritual, mental, and physical vocation with music from the sacred drum, conch shells, seeds and other instruments gifted by the natural environment. KetzalCoatlicue is a member of the Dance Board of the Fifth Sun based in Axochiapan, Morelos.

KetzalCoatlicue offers authentic cultural presentations with commentary on the cultural representations of nature depicted in the dance steps and the connection between the dances and the environment. Our members are all volunteers and range in age from toddlers to adults. Each member is instructed in the art of designing and production of regalia. We have danced for educational programs, community groups, vigils, parent meetings, community demonstrations and public celebrations. We are located in South Minneapolis.

Danza Mexica Cuauhtemoc is a community of people dedicated to the preservation and promotion of the Mexica/Azteca culture, ceremonies, warrior dance, accurate history and traditions.

Danza Mexica Cuauhtemoc works to build unity, understanding, mutual respect and harmony amongst all nations. This is done by coming together and supporting one another in struggle for political, economic, environmental, social and cultural justice.

We preserve our culture by teaching and practicing the Mexica/Azteca dance, learning the accurate and true history, doings arts and craft, studying the Sun Stone (aztec calendar), study and practice the language of Nahuatl, study Mexica/Azteca and Mayan math, building  political consciousness and much more.  Basically, we are committed to learning everything we can in our life time that will build our nation.

Danza mexica Cuauhtemoc is an open circle meaning everyone is welcome to come and learn.  There are no fees to learn, join, or practice with us.

This is our culture. This is who we are and we live accordingly. We are not a performance dance troop.  Feel free to come and learn, watch us dance or invite us to share our danza at your school, community space or at a stuggle in your community.

Fuego Latino is a group of freelance dancers all Hispanic, performing folkloric dances from Colombia since 2002.   The group is committed with the rehearsals, doing research on dances, costumes, music, finding   places to rehears at, etc. The group has been a success because the great skills and ideas  all the dancers bring   to it,  as well as the extent hours the dancers have been willing to invest. Dancers are very committed with and proud of their Hispanic  community; therefore, through performances this group would like to bring  more awareness of culture, dances and rhythms.

The Corazon Latino Dance Troupe (grades 3 -12) grew out of PLAC’s (Parents of Latin American Children) La Semana Culture Camp, with the purpose of retaining and enhancing dance skills learned, and to share  Latin American culture with the community.  It is a performance-oriented troupe; a group of people whose ultimate goal is a highly polished performance.  The Corazon Latino Dance Troupe performs their dances at the Festival of Nations in early May and other special performances throughout the year.

Los Alegres Bailadores delivers colorful and truly authentic dance performances all over the Twin Cities and greater Minnesota. Their mission to preserve Mexican culture through dance is being realized through performances at festivals, schools, and ceremonies including many yearly engagements such as Saint Paul’s Cinco de Mayo festival, the Flint Hills International Children Festival, and the Minnesota History Center.
